Tongji-Polytech Nice Sophia FLY Programme (Future Leaders for Youth)  successfully held

On 24 April, the Tongji-Polytech Nice Sophia FLY Programme (Future Leaders for Youth) came to a successful conclusion at the Siping Road Campus. Professor Alexandre Caminada, Director of Polytech Nice Sophia, Ruan Xin, Deputy Dean of the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, and Qu Chen, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office, attended the closing ceremony and delivered speeches.

In his address, Professor Ruan Xin reviewed the implementation of the FLY Programme. Over the three-week project, 10 students from Polytech Nice Sophia and 10 students from the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University participated in a series of high-level academic activities. Focusing on the application of artificial intelligence in civil engineering, the students attended four academic lectures on cutting-edge topics including AI for Intelligent Building Design, AI for Construction and Site Management, Intelligent Bridge Health Monitoring and Real-time Site Monitoring using Computer Vision, and finished three project-based practical sessions on engineering intelligence.

In addition to academic activities, the programme arranged rich cultural experiences and field visits. The students visited the Tongji University History Museum, the Multi-Disaster Reduction Engineering Hall of the College of Civil Engineering and laboratories of the School of Transportation at the Jiading Campus; conducted a technical visit to the Runyang Bridge; took part in traditional Chinese cultural activities such as calligraphy, lion dance and martial arts; and visited the Bund, Xuhui District and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall to experience Shanghai’s urban charm and cultural heritage.

Professor Alexandre Caminada spoke highly of the organisation and effectiveness of the FLY Programme in his speech. He pointed out that the programme had not only deepened academic cooperation between the two universities in smart buildings, but also enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese and French youth, setting a model for the international training of engineers. Professor Ruan Xin and Professor Qu Chen congratulated the success of the programme and looked forward to expanding exchanges in more cutting-edge fields to elevate bilateral cooperation to a higher level.

At the closing ceremony, guests in attendance jointly awarded completion certificates to all participants. The students shared that they had gained a lot from the programme, improved their professional competence and forged a profound Sino-French friendship.
